Storm Impacting the Northwest U.S.; Fire Weather Conditions in Southern California; Severe Weather in the South

A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. March 2018 temperatures were around 1 to 2 degrees below normal across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana. Precipitation for the month was below normal north to above normal south. March 2018 snowfall was below normal for most areas except for a narrow swath across central Illinois, where heavy snow fell on March 24th.
  • The March 2018 maximum temperature of 58F in Chicago was lower than the maximum temperature observed during each month of meteorological winter 2017-2018 (December - 65; January - 59; February - 66). This marks the fourth occurrence of this feat (1880, 1890, 1900).

Chicago and Rockford...

At Chicago, the average high temperature was 44.7 degrees, which 
is 1.9 degrees below normal. The average low temperature was 29.1 
degrees, which is 0.1 degrees below normal. The average 
temperature for the month was 36.9 degrees which is 1.0 degrees 
below normal. During the month of March, 1.74 inches of 
precipitation was recorded, which is 0.76 inches below normal. 2.6
inches of snow was recorded, which is 3.0 inches below normal.

There were no records set during the month of March 2018 for 
Chicago.

At Rockford, the average high temperature was 45.8 degrees, which
is 1.1 degrees below normal. The average low temperature was 26.1
degrees, which is 1.4 degrees below normal. The average 
temperature for the month was 36.0 degrees, which is 1.2 degrees 
below normal. During the month of March, 1.22 inches of 
precipitation was recorded, which is 1.10 inches below normal. 2.4
inches of snow was recorded, which is 2.4 inches below normal.

There were no records set during the month of March 2018 for 
Rockford.
