This past January finished with well above normal average monthly temperatures across the region. While little snow was seen in the first 2/3rds of the month as a result of this warmth, the latter third of the month featured enough snowfall to bring Chicago and Rockford close to their normal January snow totals.

...A Look Back at the Climate for the Month of January 2023 for
Chicago and Rockford...

At Chicago, the average high temperature was 37.5 degrees, which
is 5.9 degrees above normal. The average low temperature was
27.1 degrees, which is 8.3 degrees above normal. The average
temperature for the month was 32.3 degrees, which is 7.1 degrees
above normal. 2.60 inches of liquid precipitation were recorded,
which is 0.61 inches above normal. 9.9 inches of snow were
recorded, which is 1.4 inches below normal.

No daily or monthly records were set for Chicago during the month
of January 2023.

At Rockford, the average high temperature was 34.2 degrees, which
is 5.1 degrees above normal. The average low temperature was
23.6 degrees, which is 9.1 degrees above normal. The average
temperature for the month was 28.9 degrees, which is 7.1 degrees
above normal. 2.07 inches of liquid precipitation were recorded,
which is 0.47 inches above normal. 11.0 inches of snow were
recorded, which is 0.1 inches above normal.

One daily record was set and one was tied for Rockford during the
month of January 2023:

* Record daily snowfall of 4.9 inches set on the 28th.
* Record daily warmest minimum temperature of 33 degrees tied on
  the 19th.
