Regional Outbreaks of Severe Weather Through Early Next Week; Early Season Heat Wave across the South

Active spring pattern across the center of our nation with several episodes of severe weather and heavy rainfall expected into next week. The potential for very large hail, long track tornadoes, severe wind gusts, frequent cloud to ground lightning strikes and flash flooding are in the outlook. Fast Facts:

  • The remnants of Subtropical Storm Alberto were the primary impetus to heavy showers and embedded storms on Wednesday, May 30.
  • Atmospheric moisture was high, near or at record levels for late May, setting the stage for periods of heavy rain and isolated totals of 2-5", especially over DuPage and northwestern Cook County.
  • Some of the showers were extremely slow moving in the late afternoon and early evening, overlapping the evening commute time.
  • The heaviest hit communities with rainfall and some flooding impacts were Addison, Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Elmhurst, and Villa Park.
  • The 0.90" of rain at Chicago O'Hare pushed their total to 8.21" for the month, setting a record for the wettest May.
