Storm Impacting the Northwest U.S.; Fire Weather Conditions in Southern California; Severe Weather in the South

A Pacific storm is bringing areas of low elevation rain, moderate to heavy mountain snow, and high winds to the Northwest. Strong Santa Ana winds and very dry conditions are producing elevated to critical fire weather conditions in southern California. Fast Facts:

  • The remnants of Subtropical Storm Alberto were the primary impetus to heavy showers and embedded storms on Wednesday, May 30.
  • Atmospheric moisture was high, near or at record levels for late May, setting the stage for periods of heavy rain and isolated totals of 2-5", especially over DuPage and northwestern Cook County.
  • Some of the showers were extremely slow moving in the late afternoon and early evening, overlapping the evening commute time.
  • The heaviest hit communities with rainfall and some flooding impacts were Addison, Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Elmhurst, and Villa Park.
  • The 0.90" of rain at Chicago O'Hare pushed their total to 8.21" for the month, setting a record for the wettest May.
