| Watch, Warning, and Advisory map from Tuesday, June 30th. Heat Advisories are in orange and Extreme Heat Warnings are Violet/Red. |
The loop below shows a daily analysis of heights at 500 mb, or approximately 20,000 feet aloft, from the evening of Monday, June 30th through Friday, July 3rd. An intense ridge of high pressure can be seen initially building across parts of the Tennessee River Valley before gradually shifting east towards the Mid Atlantic. These high pressure ridges allow air temperatures to warm well into the 90s, and southwesterly winds at the surface on the periphery of the high push deep moisture northward from the Gulf.
The dewpoint temperature is a measure of how much water vapor is in the air. This can be an excellent quantifier of how an air mass feels:

The combination of very warm afternoon temperatures in the low to mid 90s, and dewpoints in the 70s (upper 70s to near 80 on Tuesday), resulted in peak heat indices over 100 degrees for several days. The graphics below show the maximum observed air temperatures and heat indices on Monday through Wednesday.

Rainfall
Four rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms impacted nearly the same areas over multiple days leading to increasingly water-logged soils. The heaviest rainfall of the active stretch occurred during the afternoon of Saturday, July 4th when a swath of 1 to locally near 5 inches fell from Aurora to Darien. Additional pockets of heavy rain occurred near Elgin to Bartlett. By this point, soils were almost completely saturated, and this final burst of heavy rain lead to a widespread and significant flash flood event across the western Chicago suburbs.
