Record Heat for the Intermountain West and Northern Plains; Heavy Rainfall and Severe Weather Threats

Record setting heat is expected over the next several days from the Intermountain West through the northern Plains. Furthermore, fire weather concerns increase with dry and breezy conditions. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorm threats for the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys, central Appalachians and Southeast today. Headline: Recap of January 8-9 Weather Event; Sub-headline: Thank you to our volunteer observers, broadcast media, and followers for your reports!; A strong weather system tracked through the Midwest on January 8th and into the 9th, bringing record warmth, thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds to the area. Unusually heavy rainfall (for the wintertime) fell during the evening of the 8th, resulting in several instances of flooding across the Chicago metro and a narrow corridor of 1-3” rainfall totals. Winds also gusted above 50 mph in many locations, primarily during the overnight hours into the morning of the 9th.
