Pacific moisture will continue to bring locally heavy coastal/lower elevation rain and heavy mountain snow to the West Coast and portions of the Intermountain West through Monday. A wintry mix will create hazardous travel across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest into early Monday. Dry, gusty winds are resulting in elevated to critical fire weather in the south/central High Plains. Read More >

1.) Pontiac Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: This tornado began just south of 4H Park Rd. on the northwest side of Pontiac and immediately moved northeast across the Motorola and Vermillion Estates subdivisions. There, it caused roofing and siding damage to a number of houses, apartments, and manufactured homes. Two houses had large portions of roofing blown off, leaving their attics exposed. The tornado then crossed IL Route 23 and produced additional siding and fascia damage to a few manufactured homes in the Redwood mobile home park before ending north of E 1830 North Rd. The tornado also damaged a number of trees in its path. |
2.) Gibson City Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: A large, west-facing section of the metal roof of the southernmost building at the GDM (formerly Dairyland Seed) facility south of Gibson City was peeled eastward as a strengthening miniature supercell storm passed overhead. While no condensation funnel was evident, eyewitnesses reported visible rotation in the clouds passing over the facility and debris from the impacted building getting lofted and swirled around in the air before being deposited in the field to the east of the facility, which would suggest that a brief tornado occurred here. This is further corroborated by an apparent tornado debris signature (TDS) sampled by the KILX radar that appeared shortly after the associated circulation passed over this location. This tornado appeared to only cause high-end EF-0 damage to the one building at the GDM facility before ending a few hundred yards to the east-northeast. |
3.) West of Clifton Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: This tornado formed west of Clifton near the intersection of N 400 East Rd. and E 2900 North Rd. Three power poles were snapped as the tornado tracked across E 2900 North Rd. At a property at the intersection of N 500 East Rd. and E 2900 North Rd., tree damage was noted, and roofing material was peeled off of a house. As the tornado continued to move east-northeastward and crossed N 600 East Rd. and E 2950 North Rd., two farm outbuildings had portions of their roofs ripped off at the same property. Additional tree damage was also noted. The tornado likely lifted before reaching N 700 East Rd. |
4.) Clifton - St. Anne Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: This tornado likely began in a field approximately two miles east of Clifton based on a tight gate-to-gate velocity couplet sampled by the KLOT radar. In the first few minutes of its lifespan, the tornado largely remained over open fields and may have briefly lifted as little damage was observed near and west of U.S. Highway 45/52. However, the tornado strengthened as it tracked across and east of N 1500 East Rd. At the intersection of E 3100 North Rd. and N 1600 East Rd., a residence had a sizable portion of its eastward-facing roof torn off and deposited in the downstream field. Several trees at this property were damaged as well, including one pine tree whose top half was snapped off and tossed nearly 100 yards to the east. At the adjacent property to the east-northeast, a barn was shifted off of its foundation and had a portion of its roof peeled. As the tornado reached the Iroquois River, it tore the roof off of a garage and peeled roofing material off of a house at a property next to the river. Extensive tree damage was noted at this property and just to the east along the river, where multiple trees were uprooted and dozens of trees lost limbs and branches. The tornado weakened a bit east of the Iroquois River, but continued to cause tree damage as it approached and crossed N 1800 East Rd. A residence along N 1900 East Rd. and two additional barns along N 2000 East Rd. were then damaged by the tornado. The tornado lifted over a field southwest of St. Anne, shortly after it tipped over an irrigation pivot. |
5.) Northeast of Clifton Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: This tornado likely began near or just west of N 1300 East Rd. northeast of Clifton, where some twigs and branches were downed across the road. Little to no damage was observed as the tornado tracked across open farm fields on either side of U.S. Highway 45/52. The tornado then impacted a farmstead along N 1500 East Rd. just north of E 3200 North Rd., peeling roof shingles off of the house at the property and damaging multiple farm outbuildings. A barn was blown off of its foundation, while a garage collapsed entirely after it was penetrated by the tornado's estimated 85 mph peak winds. The tornado likely lifted before reaching the Iroquois River as no damage was noted to the treeline along the river or anywhere east of there along the parent circulation's track. |
6.) Martinton Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: Storm spotters and storm chasers captured footage of a funnel cloud near Martinton that lasted for several minutes just before 4:00 PM CST. Photos and videos shared with the NWS show that the funnel cloud was intermittently in contact with the ground as it tracked east-northeastward across open farm fields between N 1900 East Rd. and N 2400 East Rd. The last footage of the funnel cloud was captured at around 3:59 PM as it dissipated east of Martinton south of E 2800 North Rd. The tornado did not cause any known damage, and therefore, has been assigned the EF-U (EF-Unknown) rating. |
Fairbury - Forrest Straight-Line Winds
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: NWS meteorologists also surveyed storm damage that occurred in southern Livingston County during the morning of the 28th. The damage survey confirmed that a concentrated area of straight-line wind damage in and west of Forrest was produced by a microburst with estimated peak winds of 80 mph. Damage consisted of downed power poles and trees, at least one shed blown off of its foundation, and a portion of Prairie Central Junior High School's gymnasium roof getting blown off. |

| Effective deep-layer wind shear (change of wind speed and direction). Values over 50 knots were supportive of mid-level updraft rotation. | Low-level (0-3 km) instability. Values near 50 J/kg were sufficient for low-level updraft intensification. | Significant Tornado Parameter (STP). Values near 0.5 indicate an airmass supportive of storm rotation and brief tornadoes. |

| NWS WPC surface analysis from 3 PM CST on 12/28/2025. This map shows a deepening low pressure system tracking northeastward across northern Illinois. The system's "warm sector" (the area south of its warm front and east of its cold front) was where conditions were favorable for severe weather and tornadoes. | NWS Lincoln/Central Illinois weather balloon sounding from 1900Z/1 PM CST. This sounding shows an unusually large amount of instability for the Midwest in the wintertime, unseasonably warm and moist air at ground level, and a substantial amount of wind shear, particularly in the lowest levels of the atmosphere. | KLOT radar imagery from 3:46 PM CST, showing (clockwise from the top left): reflectivity (Z), velocity (V), normalized rotation (NROT), and correlation coefficient (CC). The reductions in the CC product (blue/green colors) co-located with two distinct, tight rotational velocity couplets (circled in white) is indicative of two tornadoes ongoing simultaneously at this time in northern Iroquois County. |
