Powerful Winter Storm from the Upper Midwest into the Northeast; Severe Thunderstorms in the Midwest and Ohio Valley

A rapidly-intensifying storm is expected to bring heavy snow, blizzard conditions, and icing from the Upper Midwest through the Great Lakes and Northeast. Overview

  • Wind gusts of 50 to 64 mph were observed across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana. 
  • The peak wind gust at Chicago O'Hare was 60 mph.
  • These winds were a result of a powerful, strengthening low pressure system that moved across the region.

Hourly time steps of the strong surface low pressure as it deepened rapidly from the Plains to the Great Lakes from midday on the 23rd through midday on the 24th.
