Record Heat for the Intermountain West and Northern Plains; Heavy Rainfall and Severe Weather Threats

Record setting heat is expected over the next several days from the Intermountain West through the northern Plains. Furthermore, fire weather concerns increase with dry and breezy conditions. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorm threats for the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys, central Appalachians and Southeast today. Overview

  • Multiple precipitation events, including the first being a rain/snow event, brought 3 to 5+ inches of precipitation across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana between April 27 - May 2.

  • Most area rivers quickly went up into flood stage by April 29, including the Illinois River reaching major flood stage at Morris and LaSalle May 1-4. The LaSalle River at LaSalle crested at its third highest stage on record for that location (preliminary). Impacts near the rivers were felt in numerous communities.

  • Other flooding was seen on some area roads, parks, and other properties, especially on Tuesday April 30 and Wednesday May 1.
