Public Information Statement National Weather Service Huntsville AL 242 PM CDT Tue May 16 2023 ...Forecast Services to be Discontinued at the Flint River at Chase River Gage... When the Winchester Road Bridge over the Flint River was replaced back in late 2014, the decision was made to remove the river gage at that location due to construction. The United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center (LMRFC), and the local National Weather Service Office (NWS) in Huntsville, Alabama have discussed re-establishing the river gage, but to date, there has been no funding available to do so. River level information has not been available since the gage was removed, nor have there been any updates or maintenance of discharge ratings at the site. In order to aid in the forecast services and verification of the downstream point on the Flint River at Brownsboro, the Chase forecast point was allowed to continue in the interim. However, recently, the LMRFC has streamlined forecasting processes, and without a gage at this location, the decision to remove forecasting services was made earlier this year. We regret to inform the users of the previous Flint River at Chase gage that this site will be discontinued as a river forecast point as of Friday, June 16th, 2023. It will formally be removed from the Advanced Hydrologic and Prediction Service page (AHPS) at that time.
