Every winter hazardous weather including snow, sleet, and freezing rain moves through the region. One particularly dangerous hazard is snow squalls. A snow squall
is an intense short-lived burst of heavy snowfall that leads to a quick reduction in visibilities and is often accompanied by gusty winds. The combination of a quick
reduction in visibilities and sudden slick conditions on roadways can often lead to high speed wrecks, pileups, and subsequently injuries and fatalities. In recent years, the National Weather Service has started issuing Snow Squall Warnings to alert motorists and help mitigate the impacts of snow squalls on the
roadways. In order to raise increased awareness on snow squalls and snow squall safety, additional snow squall awareness information will be shared on November 21, 2022 for Snow Squall Awareness Day.
