...FACTS REGARDING MAY 1ST TORNADOES IN LEWIS... LAWRENCE... AND GILES COUNTIES...
A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DAMAGE SURVEY TEAM CONFIRMED THAT TWO TORNADOES STRUCK SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE ON FRIDAY MAY 1. BOTH WERE RATED EF-1 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE WITH WINDS UP TO ABOUT 100 MPH.
THE FIRST TORNADO STARTED AROUND 225 PM CDT ABOUT 8 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF HOHENWALD IN LEWIS COUNTY...OR JUST WEST OF NAPIER...AND MOVED EAST INTO FAR NORTHWEST LAWRENCE COUNTY. THE TORNADO WAS ON THE GROUND FOR 4.5 MILES AND WAS UP TO 150 YARDS WIDE. IT SNAPPED OR UPROOTED MANY HUNDREDS OF LARGE HARDWOOD TREES. IT ALSO FLIPPED A TRACTOR TRAILER. THE HARDEST HIT AREA WAS A LARGE CAMPGROUND IN NAPIER. IN ADDITION TO THE TREES... SEVERAL LARGE CAMPER TRAILERS WERE DAMAGED/FLIPPED BY THE TORNADO. TWO PEOPLE SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES AND HAD TO BE RESCUED FROM INSIDE A CAMPER.
THE SECOND TORNADO OCCURRED AT 305 PM CDT IN NORTHWEST GILES COUNTY ABOUT 2.5 MILES NORTHWEST OF CAMPBELLSVILLE. IT WAS ON THE GROUND FOR 1.1 MILES AND WAS UP TO 100 YARDS WIDE. DAMAGES WERE SIMILAR TO THE OTHER TORNADO AS MANY LARGE TREES WERE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. SEVERAL HOMES SUSTAINED MINOR ROOF DAMAGE AND SEVERAL OUTBUILDINGS WERE DESTROYED.
