Record Heat for the Intermountain West and Northern Plains; Heavy Rainfall and Severe Weather Threats

Record setting heat is expected over the next several days from the Intermountain West through the northern Plains. Furthermore, fire weather concerns increase with dry and breezy conditions. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorm threats for the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys, central Appalachians and Southeast today. A widespread significant wind storm began in western and north central Nebraska during the afternoon of July 8, and moved through southeast Nebraska and into Kansas early on the morning of July 9. This storm produced widespread wind damage with numerous reports of 60 to 80 mph winds, and a few pockets of even stronger wind! Widespread damage to trees, power lines, and crops was reported, along with some damage to homes and outbuildings as well. Some of the locations in southeast Nebraska that were hit particularly hard include Fairbury, Seward, Lincoln, and Wymore, with many other locations experiencing substantial damage too.
