A taste of winter is headed for the backcountry of western Montana and north-central Idaho this Saturday and Sunday, creating potentially hazardous conditions for hikers, hunters, and anyone traveling on forest roads. Expect dropping temperatures into the 30s and 40s, combined with gusty winds that will produce dangerous wind chills in the teens. Snow will create slushy conditions on roads and trails. Cold, wet, and windy conditions bring a significant risk of hypothermia. Please be prepared with extra layers and emergency supplies, tell someone your plans, and check the latest forecast at weather.gov/missoula before you go.
A much colder airmass will move into the Northern Rockies late this weekend and into early next week. Clear skies overnight will allow for sufficient cooling into the 20s and 30s for most areas. This will likely signify the end of the growing season for sensitive outdoor vegetation. Take precautions to protect these sensitive plants and start prepping your home, property, and vehicles for the winter season ahead.
