Transitioning to a New Format for the Area Forecast Discussion

What is the Change?: The NWS Portland/Gray Forecast Office will transition to a Key Message format for the Area Forecast Discussion (AFDGYX).

When Will The Change Take Place?:  January 6th, 2026

Why?:  This strategic change aligns the Area Forecast Discussion (AFD) with an impacts-first message philosophy, enabling our office to streamline communication and reduce redundancy. This transition moves away from a strictly chronological layout to focus immediately on potential weather impacts and hazards. By prioritizing Key Messages, we aim to enhance clarity and eliminate duplication within the Area Forecast Discussion

Format Change Details: The following images show the difference in the format layout compared to the old and new Area Forecast Discussion.  Note that the biggest shift is format is from a "time" based chronological layout to a Key Message Hazard priority.  In addition, some legacy format options still remain, such as a list of the current hazards at the bottom.
