Overview

A low pressure system tracked across Lower Michigan late December 9th into the morning hours of December 10th, with snowfall totals ranging from 1 inch near the Ohio border to localized 6 inches along the M-59 corridor. The snow was heavy and wet in character (high liquid content) with temperatures right near the freezing mark, while southern portions of the forecast area saw a transition to rain as temperatures rose above freezing in the warm sector. This kept snow totals for the city of Detroit/Ann Arbor and points south between 1-3 inches, with exactly 2.0 inches measured for the Detroit climate site. Highest totals were observed around the M-59 corridor, (NWS Detroit official observation of 6.2" in White Lake) and north of M-46 (6.5" in Oil City and 7.1" in Saginaw). Snow tapered off in the afternoon as a cold front dropped across SE Michigan, leading to a quick drop in temperatures that bottomed out in the teens overnight.
