...MAJOR WINTER STORM LIKELY FRIDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING...
...DANGEROUS COLD EXPECTED FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY MORNING...
This Outlook is for Northwest and West Central Arkansas as well as
much of Eastern Oklahoma.
.DAY ONE...This Evening and Tonight.
DISCUSSION...
Hazardous weather is not anticipated across eastern Oklahoma and
northwest Arkansas through tonight.
SPOTTER AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ACTION STATEMENT...
Spotter Activation Not Expected.
.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday.
THURSDAY...High Wind Potential.
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY...Winter Weather Potential...High Wind
Potential...Dangerous Wind Chill Potential.
SUNDAY...Winter Weather Potential...Dangerous Wind Chill Potential.
MONDAY AND TUESDAY...Dangerous Wind Chill Potential.
EXTENDED DISCUSSION...
Increasing moisture in advance of an approaching upper level storm
system will combine with cold Arctic air moving into the region to
set the stage for a major winter storm beginning Friday afternoon
and ending during the day Sunday. The latest data continues to
suggest that snow will be the predominant precipitation type north
of Interstate 40, with more of a wintry mix along and south of
Interstate 40. For the areas north of Interstate 40 that see
primarily snow, significant accumulations in the 6 to 10 inch
range are expected, with locally higher amounts to around a foot
possible. There is a medium to high chance that roads in this area
will become dangerous for travel or be impassable. Widespread
road closures are expected, including major routes.
For areas along and south of Interstate 40, a wintry mix of
freezing rain, sleet and snow is expected. While this may reduce
snowfall totals, there is a medium to high chance that
accumulations of snow, sleet and ice will be enough to make travel
hazardous to nearly impossible. Roads may close here as well.
Across far southeast Oklahoma where the predominant precipitation
type is trending toward freezing rain, there is a low chance that
accumulations of ice on trees and power lines could cause power
outages. Recent model trends of higher potential ice accumulations
here suggest that chances for power outages may increase with
future forecast updates.
Dangerous wind chills are also forecast to develop behind the
Arctic front Friday night into Saturday. Across northeast Oklahoma
and northwest Arkansas, wind chills between 5 below and 15 below
are forecast, with values from zero to 5 above elsewhere. Wind
chills from zero to 10 below are forecast Saturday night into
Sunday morning, and again Sunday night into Monday morning.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PLANNING STATEMENT...
Emergency managers and first responders should continue
preparations for a major winter storm and dangerous cold event.
Hazardous road conditions from significant accumulations of snow,
sleet and ice will result in accidents and road closures across
the area. Along with the winter precipitation, there is a high
likelihood of bitterly cold temperatures and wind chill values
below zero at times from Friday night through Monday morning.
Warming stations will likely be needed.
