 June is a HOT One!!!
for the South Plains and for the Nation

June brought the heat, both locally and nationally.  As the below graph displays, temperatures through much of June were well above average. The average high temperature for the entire month of June in Lubbock was 93.9 degrees, which was 3.9 degrees above the normal.  The average low for the month was 68.0 degrees, which was also 3.9 degrees above normal. This resulted in an average temperature for the entire month of 81.0 degrees.  This ranked June as the 6th hottest on record for Lubbock, though the mercury only eclipsed the 100 degree mark twice.

Below are the other Junes that ranked ahead of 2010 as the warmest on record for Lubbock:

  Year                Average Temperature (°F)
1990                               84.4
1980, 1953                    83.1
1994                               82.6
1998                               81.5
2010                               81.0

If the last few days of June weren't on the cool side, June 2010 could have finished as the 5th warmest of all time.

All the heat wasn't confined to the local region, instead it was a hot month for the nation as the whole. June 2010 finished as the eighth warmest on record for the entire United States. To read the full NOAA national climate report for June CLICK HERE.
