PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK TX

...THE WINTER STORM HAS MOVED EAST OF THE AREA BUT DANGEROUS BLACK
ICE WILL REMAIN ON MANY ROADS TONIGHT...

SNOWFALL HAS ENDED ACROSS WEST-CENTRAL TEXAS THIS EVENING AS A
POTENT WINTER STORM HAS MOVED EAST INTO OKLAHOMA. IMPRESSIVE SNOW
TOTALS WERE TOPPED WITH BOTH CHILDRESS AND FRIONA REPORTING 7
INCHES. A NUMBER OF LOCATIONS REPORTED 4 INCHES OR MORE...MAINLY
OVER THE NORTHERN AND CENTRAL SOUTH PLAINS...SOUTHERN PANHANDLE...
AND NORTHERN ROLLING PLAINS. BY LATE AFTERNOON SOME MELTING OR
SETTLING OF THE EARLIER SNOW HAD ALREADY OCCURRED.

VERY COLD ARCTIC AIR REMAINS ACROSS THE AREA TONIGHT. LOW
TEMPERATURES WILL PLUMMET INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS OR LOWER TEENS OVER
MOST OF THE AREA...AND WILL RE-FREEZE ANY REMAINING WATER AND
SLUSH ON ROADS. MUCH OF THE ICE WILL BE THIN AND NEARLY
INVISIBLE...AND IS KNOWN AS BLACK ICE BECAUSE IT IS TRANSPARENT
ENOUGH TO STILL SEE THE BLACK PAVEMENT UNDERNEATH. THIS MAY GIVE A
FALSE APPEARANCE OF A DRY PAVEMENT WHEN IN FACT IT IS COVERED BY A
THIN GLAZE OF ICE. DANGEROUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE INTO
FRIDAY MORNING.

PRELIMINARY SNOW ACCUMULATIONS AT PRESTON SMITH LUBBOCK
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT INDICATE THAT THIS STORM RANKS AS THE 14TH
MOST SIGNIFICANT NOVEMBER SNOW EVENT ON RECORD. PREVIOUSLY...THE
MOST RECENT SNOW STORM OF SIMILAR MAGNITUDE OCCURRED ON NOVEMBER 2ND
2004...WHEN THE LUBBOCK METRO AREA RECEIVED BETWEEN 3 AND 5 INCHES.

BELOW ARE THE SNOWFALL ESTIMATES AS OF 600 PM CST. NO ADDITIONAL
SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED TONIGHT. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT BECAUSE OF THE
GUSTY NORTHERLY WINDS DURING THE STORM WHICH CAUSED LARGE DRIFTS TO
FORM IN MANY LOCATIONS...SNOW DEPTH MEASUREMENTS WERE DIFFICULT TO
MAKE. THE DEEPEST DRIFTS WERE TYPICALLY NOT USED IN MEASURING SNOW
DEPTH.
